Useful Tip: Make sure to use proper spelling in your searches; abbreviations or acronyms are not acceptable.

I need help finding books and articles for a paper on the economic impact of Hurricane Katrina.

This is for my ECO202 class. I need at least five resources. Where should I look? Can you help me find information about impact on specific sectors of the economy, like hotels or grocery stores or insurance rates?

Begin with a "discovery" search using the search box on the library home page by putting a natural language phrase, something like "hurricane katrina," into that search box and see what you get. Examine the books and eBooks, in particular, to gather up some subject headings. (These are controlled vocabulary terms that the databases will use as subject headings. Using them will streamline your search for additional articles.)

If you have to use newspapers to figure out the economic impact, you'll want to search in the newspaper bundles we have in ProQuest, EBSCO, and LexisNexis databases. Hopefully, there has been enough written on the subject in the scholarly literature, including reports of research on the economic impact of the hurricane, that we won't need to resort to that route.

As it turns out, there were several good eBooks on the subject and one print book in that set of results from the "discovery" search. If there is enough time, you can have the print book shipped to you and then pay to send it back to the library when you're done. If not, use the Book/Book Chapter Request Form to have individual pages or up to one complete chapter of the print book scanned and emailed to you.

Remember that you can email links to yourself inside of the catalog "discovery" search results that will bring you back to any of the results you found that way, or you can bookmark/download the materials right away.

As it turns out, there is more than enough on this subject in the EBSCOhost All Reference Databases collection, using the Business Source Complete module in conjunction with Academic Search Complete and eJournals. Use the Advanced search template and enter "Hurricane Katrina" as a subject on one line and "economic aspects" as a subject on the next one. Use the limiters at the side of the results to filter out by date, full-text availability, format, etc.

I'm attaching a few of the book titles here from the "discovery" search and a few of the ones from the article search in EBSCO for you.

As always, your Saint Leo librarians are happy to work with you to find library materials for any of your projects.
