Q

I have to do an observation paper and the topic selected is to observe and analyze in a court room.

I have never done an observation before and I am at a loss. Can you direct me in the right path for finding library materials? The class is Deviance and Social Control. The assignment I choose is a court room setting of a group and conduct an observation, focusing on noting behavior in the group. Then I need to write a paper relating my observation and analyzing behaviors using what I have learned from the course.

Answer

I sent you an article from The American Enterprise journal written by Raymond Wisher (May 1996, vol. 7, issue 3, p. 68) titled “A Day at the Zoo” in which he describes observing youths in court while he was waiting to testify as a witness in a case. I thought it might help you to see an actual observation described, since it is similar to your assignment.

Also, I sent you a link from the catalog for a print book on your topic. If you want to read the entire book, we can ship it to you and then you pay to ship it back, OR, you can ask us to scan and send one complete chapter, such as the one titled “Constructing participant/observation relation” by Robert M. Emerson and Melvin Pollner. Either way, you would use the Book/Book Chapter Request Form (home page > Services tab > Forms link > Book Request Form).
