See attached PowerPoint slide with audio button in middle of slide - attached, the Vital Source Link will give the free preview IF there is one AND not all textbooks have a free 10 day preview!

Hey Abbie:

Sorry to bother you.  Hope you are well.  Would you send me a screenshot of where the free two week preview of a textbook would be for a student, please?  Students ask about this from time to time.  I want to be able to show them.

Depending on the course, the instructions for accessing the free temporary access is different.  Are there classes you receive calls for more than others?

Hey Abbie:

When I visited one of the online classes this past weekend, the discussion of the textbook came up.  I asked one of the students if they would send me a screenshot of where the 10 day free preview would be if available.  They sent me the attached image.  By the way, they said that for this particular class HUS 121 (authored by Kinsella - 2015), they could not access the preview.  And to answer your question...there is no specific class or kind of class students ask/need the free preview, it varies.

In the classes with Pearson Direct Digital access books, this is how the students access.  Often the students do not realize they have clicked to begin with free temp access, they don’t read the fine print.  In HUS 121 this term there was an issue with the rights to the eBook between VitalSource and Pearson, we took care of it quickly, but that may be why the student thought they never had the temp access this term.  I am sorry there is no one good answer for this.  I did create a PPT presentation for the advising teams so they could trouble shoot some of this.  The attached document should help you if students ask.

Abbie:

Thanks for the PowerPoint.

Question:  May I share it (PowerPoint)with the other librarians?

Question:  If students activated the HUS 121 10day free access, then there was the rights issue that halted it, now students want to access 10 days free but since we are into week two they no longer have access to that free period?

Viki

I meant into week 3

Right, they won’t extend it into week five on free access.  Yes, you can share this.

  1. There was an issue with the link in the courses yesterday, but we fixed it this morning in all sections. They should be able to click on the VitalSource eText link on the course Start Here module and access it. This info added 8/26/2020 VS
